Gable Roof No Overhang

This can be from two causes.

Gable roof no overhang.

We will protect shade the west windows with cedar awnings grates. Uplift of roof decking at the overhang. With our house we are planning minimal east and west overhangs and ample south and north overhangs. Also note that a new fully adhered membrane is installed on the original roof deck replacing the one installed 17 years ago is folded down to catch the top edge of the wall water control layer.

Inadequate nailing of the sheathing to supporting framing or inadequate connections of the framing at the rake edge that supports the roof. The biggest problems with gable end overhang strength occur if your roof overhang is greater than about 12 inches. Warming trends in january and again in april cause the roof strate to warm and evidently i had condensation ptoblrms no soffit vents but do have small gable end vents. Of the many ways that gable end overhangs are built the two most common ways are the use of ladder details and outriggers ladder details are usually adequate if the overhang is less than about 8 inches although they are frequently used for longer overhangs.

We love the look of the no overhang scottish style roof line as well. With the west east overhangs the main use is siding window protection and keeping rain snow from foundation. I reshingle this past year and pulled out old r14 insulation and retaped as many as visually possible areas of vapour barrier leaks cuts in material etc. The other common wind related failure at gable ends is uplift of the roof decking at the overhang.
